Activities

In La Casona de San Andrés you can enjoy your very own wood, with various paths that lead to a river where, keeping a safe distance, and at dawn or dusk, you can observe wild animals at their habitual drinking place.

Within walking distance are the monasteries of Bárcena and Obona, both gems of Romanic architecture on the interior route of the Camino de Santiago long-distance walking path.

One of the most interesting and original attractions in the region is gold panning, practised in both the River Navelgas and River Bárcena. Contact the Barciaecus Association of Goldpanners in Navelgas.

You can take walking trails ranging in level from easy to long-distance, among which is the climb to the Mulleiroso (1235m). Guided visits are offered to the Museo Del Bosque (Forest Museum) in Muñalen where you will find a depiction of the forest’s contribution to our society. This museum also offers horse riding trips between Easter and September.

SVisit the Vaqueiro Museum in Naraval and take the trail to the “brañas” inhabited by the “Vaqueiros” and learn their history and legends. The Tineo region has a large number of “brañas”, and the Vaqueiros of this region, along with those of Valdés, were those who most struggled to integrate into the society of the time; a society that drove the Vaqueiros away and surrounded them with negative legends and myths.

The hotel is preparing a game “The Treasure Hunt”, whose rules will be given at reception.

You can take the Molinos de Agua y Maquila trail (watermills) and in the village of Rellanos you can observe one of these important mills in action.

You can visit the medieval part of the capital of the region, Tineo, with its remains of a tower and walls as well as important country houses and palaces. Also in Tineo you should not miss the church and fort and an interesting museum of sacred art (Museo de Arte Sacro).

Those who appreciate trees have excellent trails to very ancient examples like the oak at Valentín near Gera and the Fayona of Eiros (beech) in the village of the same name, between Tineo and Allande.

Tuña, with the Casa de Riego, the dolmen at Merilles, the church of Calleras and the Sorriba Palace, birthplace of Campomanes, are all essential excursions.

Fans of trout and salmon fishing will be in paradise here. Trout fishing is possible in the River Barcena at the foot of the hotel and nearby in the Yerbo, Navelgas and Naraval rivers. The salmon rivers of Narcea, Esva, Navia and Eo can be reached within thirty minutes to an hour. Hunters have abundant examples of wild boar, roe deer, stags, partridge and woodcock.

Visit the small village of Concellín at the source of the river Bárcena, or the villages of La Leirosa, Cerezal, Paradiella, Llaneces, Teixidal or La Peral near the source of the River Navelgas. You will find yourself in the most primitive of rural western Asturias; a deep Asturias that still preserves the essence of its roots in its local architecture.

It is just 60 kilometres to the forest of Muniellos (a designated biosphere reserve) in Cangas de Narcea, and many other attractions are equally accessible.

The Tineo region is famous for its gastronomy. Outstanding dishes include “potaje de berzas” (thick stew of greens and potatoes), “chosco con cachelos” (a large pork sausage), “butietso” (bones wrapped in tripe) and many other tasty dishes of monastic origin.

La Casona de San Andrés hotel is designed for your enjoyment in all seasons; the beauty of winter offers us beautiful picture-postcard views, with snow covering the fields and forests.

By night La Casona de San Andrés is all peaceful silence; a fine moment to recall the scenes we have seen during the day like the snowflakes falling in the narrow lanes and backwaters of Navelgas.
